Asteroids are hitting the Earth with only 10 minutes or hours of prior notice. Are we in danger? In one report Rubin Observatory had sent out 800,000 alerts to astronomers in one night February 24, 2026. So what is going on? The newest discovered space rock called Asteroid JH2 makes a close by the Earth on Monday May 18, 2026. The Asteroid JH2 is between 50 to 115 feet wide flying by at a distance 90,000 km closer between the Earth and the Moon. Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury are lining up in the western sky after sunset on the last couple of days of May. A rare Blue Full Moon is sliding past Antares on May 31, 2026, at 08:45 UTC. Also heads up for Jupiter Venus conjunction aligning on June 8, 2026 .

NASA is racing to closely monitor a newly detected asteroid that made a sudden close approach to Earth, triggering fresh attention from astronomers worldwide. Scientists reportedly scrambled to calculate the object’s trajectory after its late discovery raised concerns over how difficult some near-Earth objects can be to detect in time. While there is no confirmed collision threat, the incident has once again highlighted the growing global focus on planetary defence and asteroid tracking systems.

On May 15, 2026 a different asteroid made a huge impact on Earth. The Asteroid named 2026 JN4 as it impacted Earth over the Arafura Sea. It entered Earth’s atmosphere between Australia and Papua New Guinea at 13:44 UTC on May 15, 2026, after ESA’s Meerkat and JPL’s Scout systems identified a high Earth-impact probability from a short observation arc. Since then it is the 12th predicted Earth impactor and the first from December 3, 2024. Meter-scale asteroids of this size and velocity usually disintegrate high in the atmosphere.
Ray's Astrophotography May 15, 2026 video looks at real asteroid tracking data, fireball footage, and Near-Earth Object (NEO) alerts to understand how close some of these objects are coming to our planet. Examining 11 asteroid impacts that have been detected before atmospheric entry, compare their distances to the Earth–Moon system. Why astronomers are improving asteroid detection systems around the world.
