In less than two hours, we will see the first smoke. As they have already began behind closed doors at the Vatican City to select a new Pope. Selecting a new Pope is not as easy as it seems one time it took three hours another time it took a few years.
The 267 th Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church to be selected at the St. Peter's Square will begin this afternoon. The black smoke is said to begin the process and the white smoke is when the new Pope has been chosen later on.
On May 7, 2025, in the morning the Cardinals gathered for the Misa Prolegendo Ponte the mass for the election for the Holy Father. Forty seven thousand priests around the world will be celebrating this Mass their local time. In the Vatican it will be celebrated with the dean of the college of cardinals with 220 cardinals. At the Sistine Chapel the conclave consisting of 133 cardinals will cast their votes beneath the famous Renaissance frescoes. They will enter the Chapel at around 17:30 local time (16:30 BST).
