1977 QUBE Promo

1977 needs to be examined in a deeper depth. According to Wikepedia

Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment Company was a joint venture owned/operated by Warner Communications and American Express that developed and initiated several successful cable networks that remain well-known.

Notable Channels:

The Movie Channel: Launched in 1979. Existing prior to the creation of QUBE in 1973 as "Star Channel", it served as a premium movie channel for the system. MTV: Music Television: Launched at 12:01 a.m. EDT on August 1st, 1981, a network that aired music programming such as concerts and music videos.

Nickelodeon: Launched in 1979, an educational/entertainment network aimed towards preschoolers and children. Its progenitor was a program called Pinwheel that played only on QUBE.

Despite its technological innovation and vision, the creation of the QUBE and its relative financial failure meant that Warner Communications needed outside capital to expand beyond Columbus, Ohio. Additionally, Warner leader Steve Ross understood that the future of cable television was going to demand an ever-expanding programming need.

Notice Nickelodeon is mentioned a childrens network.

In 1974, Warner Communications entered the cable television industry by forming Warner Cable in Ohio and Virginia. Also

QUBE programming[edit] Talent Search (produced by Emmy-award-winning producer Robert Morton, who subsequently produced Late Night with David Letterman), a variety show featuring local talent, involved audiences rating each performer. And when the score dropped below an acceptable level, the performance was stopped.

Columbus Alive, a homey talk show, featured national and local celebrities, public opinion polls, and local chat. Screen Test was an interactive game show about the movies. Pinwheel was a show for preschoolers featuring cartoons and puppets. It aired on Nickelodeon when it launched in April 1979 and continued until 1990.

Flippo's Magic Circus was a children's series, hosted the locally-known Flippo the Clown, that featured in-studio and play-at-home interactive games.

How Do You Like Your Eggs?, a four-episode game show hosted by Bill Cullen, involved two couples predicting how the home audience responded to questions.

QUBE promised an interactive gaming channel, a forefront to video games, that was supposed to award prizes, such as free service credits. This never materialized. America Goes Bananaz was a show aimed at teens, hosted by Michael Young and later Randy Hamilton. It aired on Nickelodeon from 1979 to 1980.

Also QUBE did P-10: Adult Films.

However, by 1982, Warner Cable was running at a $99 million loss, and by 1983, their total debt was $875 million. Warner Cable brought in American Express as an investor, and the two companies formed Warner-Amex Cable Communications with a stellar board of directors, including American Express chairman Jim Robinson and President Lou Gerstner, and the former head of Shearson/American Express, Sanford Weill. Warner bought out American Express after the latter made an offer to buy Warner’s position, leading to conflicts between the two companies.
